O2 Sensor Spacers for BMW, Audi & European Cars
O2 sensor spacers (also called bung extenders or catalyst spacers) solve P0420/P0430 catalytic converter efficiency codes after a catalytic delete or high-flow cat install. By moving the downstream O2 sensor away from the area of maximum oxygen turbulence, the spacer lets the sensor read a more stable signal — preventing the ECU from incorrectly flagging a failed catalyst.
How They Work
The downstream (post-cat) O2 sensor monitors exhaust oxygen content to verify catalytic converter efficiency. When you remove or replace the cat, the sensor may see readings outside its expected range and set a P0420 code. A spacer moves the sensor back 90–150mm and installs a mini-catalyst inside the spacer housing to smooth the reading.
Which Type to Use
- Non-fouler spacer (no mini-cat): Budget option. Works on some cars, not all. No guarantee on BMW N54/N55.
- CEL fix with mini-cat: More reliable fix. Small precious-metal substrate inside the spacer housing cleans the exhaust signal enough to satisfy the ECU monitor.
Thread Size
M18x1.5 fits all BMW, Audi, VW, and Porsche oxygen sensors. Confirm your thread pitch before ordering — some older European applications use M12x1.25.
Note
O2 sensor spacers do not pass emissions testing in jurisdictions where visual inspection or OBD2 port reads are performed. For CARB states, use a CARB-compliant high-flow catalyst instead.
