The clutch fork (also called the release fork or throwout fork) is the lever that pushes against the throw-out bearing to disengage the clutch when you press the pedal. It's a high-stress part that operates thousands of times daily. When it fails, you lose clutch function entirely — so proactive replacement during a clutch job is standard practice.
Always replace the clutch fork when replacing the clutch disc, pressure plate, or throw-out bearing. The fork pivot ball wears over time and causes imprecise clutch disengagement. On BMW E46 M3 (S54) and E9x M3 (S65), the clutch fork is a common failure point that can cause complete clutch loss if it cracks.
BMW issued a technical service bulletin for S54 and S65 clutch fork cracking. If you have an E46 M3 or E90/E92 M3 and the fork has never been replaced, replace it now — not during the next clutch job, now. We carry the updated part number that addresses the failure mode.
Older BMW and Audi (pre-2000) use cable-actuated clutches where the fork pivot is adjusted mechanically. Newer cars use hydraulic master/slave cylinder systems where the clutch fork receives hydraulic pressure. We carry hardware for both systems.
