Universal Catalytic Converters for Custom Exhaust Builds
Universal catalytic converters are the right choice for custom exhaust fabrication — when a direct-fit cat doesn't exist for your platform, you're building a custom exhaust from scratch, or you're upgrading a race car that needs a full custom system. They're purchased by substrate size, inlet/outlet diameter, and precious metal loading, then welded into the exhaust pipe.
Choosing the Right Universal Cat
- Body size (diameter × length): Larger is better for flow, but must physically fit in your chassis tunnel. Measure your available space before ordering.
- Cell density (cpsi): 200 cpsi is high-flow (maximum power, not street legal in most areas). 400 cpsi is street-legal standard. 600 cpsi is OEM-equivalent density.
- Precious metal loading: Higher loading = better conversion efficiency = more durable over time. Don't buy cheap cats — they fail quickly and throw O2 codes immediately.
Inlet/Outlet Diameter
Match to your pipe OD. Common sizes: 2.25", 2.5", 3.0" for BMW and Audi turbo applications. V-band flange options available for competition exhaust systems.
