Hitch Types for European Vehicles
- Fixed ball mount: Permanent, rigid hitch. Lower profile than a Class III American-style hitch. Common on BMW 5 Series and Audi A4/A6 wagon/Allroad applications.
- Detachable swan neck: Ball and neck separate from the receiver. Clean appearance when not towing — no visible hitch hardware. Popular on BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 where rear styling matters.
- Retractable hitch: Entire ball mechanism retracts into the bumper. Completely hidden when not in use. Higher cost, cleaner result. Available for BMW 5/7 Series and Audi A6/A8.
Towing Capacity Reference
BMW 3 Series (F30): 1,400–2,000 kg braked · BMW 5 Series (F10): 2,000 kg braked · Audi A4 (B9) Allroad: 2,000 kg braked. Always verify the specific towing limit for your variant — M and M Sport suspension models often have different ratings than base variants.
